Episode 6: Alice James

In episode six, I chat with Alice James. Alice’s chat will be an interesting one as she has lots of mixed experience in her 10-year career in the sector, so have a read of the blog below or scroll down to the bottom for the podcast episode.

Enjoy!

Alice has worked for several major research institutions and archaeological contractors across Europe, starting her journey as an archaeology and history undergraduate at Reading University, gaining experience in geophysics though fieldwork over the summer. A particular highlight was enjoying a whole summer of survey at Silchester Roman Town, uncovering some incredible anomalies and building a strong foundation in geophysical prospection.

Alice then took the Archaeological Prospection masters programme at Bradford University, using magnetic susceptibility and gradiometry to find Deserted Medieval Villages. She then put her skills to the test with a short stint in commercial archaeology before jetting off to an absolute dream position with the British School of Rome working on several significant archaeological research projects.

Alice spent a glorious two years with the BSR, undertaking research-led geophysical surveys. She helped discover Roman towns, temples, and even a monastery and got to see her results being ground-truthed in archaeological investigations the following year, which she credits as being key for her learning and understanding of geophysical anomalies and data.

Upon her return from Italy, Alice embarked on a position with AOC Archaeology, building and developing a geophysics department from scratch. Alice built the department from the ground up, building a team, acquiring kit and developing a high standard reporting strategy which can still be seen today as the department continues to go from strength to strength.

Alice then enjoyed a position with NAA, again building a geophysics presence for the company but also moving to manage more varied archaeological projects over the following five years. At the end of 2021, she jumped into the world of consultancy with the Archaeology and Heritage team at Lanpro and hasn’t looked back, continuing her journey as an archaeologist with a geophysics background.

I hope you enjoy listening to Alice’s journey – Episode 6 is below, or you can find it on Spotify / Apple Podcasts / Acast etc etc

Join me next time as we chat with Anne Roseveare in our final episode
